Imagine an Olympian walked into your classroom...

We are an Active School!

We are incredibly proud of our whole school community on achieving our very first Active School Flag. We have worked extremely hard promoting physical activity throughout our school. We have had a lot of fun encouraging pupils, teachers and our wider school community to become more active, more often!

A massive well done to our Active School Committee and we thank them for all their hard work! The Active School Committee raised the flag with great pride and joy!

Being Active and Incredible Edibles

MsConwell's pupils have been taking part in the Incredible Edible Programme. They've been learning about the importance of staying fit and healthy as well as eating healthy. Remember food is like fuel for our bodies!

Well done to Ms Conwell and all of 3rd Class for your haard work on this project!

4th & 5th Class take on the Multiplication Walkway

The sun was shining and spirits were high as the children from 4th & 5th Class completed their Multiplication Walkway Challenge. Who knew doing Maths in the sunshine could be so much fun... until you forget your calculator!! Well done to all involved!

Dare to Believe - Road to Paris

We have enjoyed taking part in the Dare to Believe, Road to Paris Healthy Ireland Challenge. Children have been getting to know and getting active with Irish Olympians Kellie Harrington, Rhys McClenaghan, Afric Keough, Sarah Lavin and Harry McNulty as they prepare for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Children have completed class challenges and quizzes. Well done to all involved!

Active School Walkway - April 2024

Thanks to our fantastic Active School Committee for setting up and launching our Active School Walkway.  Our walkway is a signposted route around the school designed to encourage exercise, mindfulness and learning on the move.

The first visitors were Mrs Gallagher's 1st Class pupils who thoroughly enjoyed their learning outdoors. Thanks to Active Flag for this great initiative.

Our Favourite Hobbies

Members of the Active School Committee surveyed all 165 pupils in our class on hobbies and physical activities they partake in outside of school hours. It appears that we have a very busy bunch of boys and girls who are involved in many different sporting areas, including: Gaelic, Soccer, Hurling, Basketball, Gymnastics, Swimming, Martial Arts, Dancing, Athletics and Horse Riding to name a few.

Teachers Are Active Too!

Our teachers here in Scoil Mhuire also know the importance of staying fit and healthy. Check out how they keep fit from the bar chart below. Well done to the Active Committee for collecting and analising this information!

Getting Active on Pancake Tuesday - February 2024

We use any excuse to get outside for a movement break. We had pancake flipping relays to celebrate Pancake Tuesday!

Run Around Europe Challenge - Feb 2024

On the 26th of February we kicked off our #RunAroundEurope Challenge. Pupils from Juniors to 6th built a 'run a day' into their daily routine for a 4 week period. Classes worked together to run laps which were then calculated to kilometres. We added these kms together and as a whole school we traveled to some of the major cities in Europe including, London, Paris, Rome and Copenhagen. Children not only ran to different cities but also studied about them too.

Well done to everyone for completing the challenge and running a whopping total of  8,036km.

Active School Slogan Competition

We recently held an Active School Slogan Competition. Children had to design and present a catchy slogan poster to help promote physical activity. The children from Juniors - 6th came up with some fabulous slogan posters. Well done to all involved. We decided that our Active School Slogan would be:

'Swim, skip, have some fun, this is how the Active School run!'

Climb the Heights Class Challenge

Skipping is all the rage at the minute in Scoil Mhuire. Mark from SKIPnROPE has planted a seed and we just cant get enough! During lunch breaks pupils are counting their skips and climbing to the peaks of many mountains around Europe.

Line Leaders - September 2023

As the cold mornings are here the Active School Committee have introduced Active Lines. This gives us the kick start we need to get going in the morning. The Leaders stood at the top of each line and counted out movements, stretches etc. Well done Line Leaders!

Meet Our Active School Committee 2023-2024

Please meet our Active School Committee who have promised to work hard in helping to achieve Active School Flag recognition.  An Active School is a school where physical activity is valued, promoted and enjoyed by all.
