Student Council

Scoil Mhuire Student Council
The first Student Council of Scoil Mhuire, Latton, was established in March 2017. It was decided that the role of the Student Council is to:
  • Discuss issues relevant to the school and to encourage and promote initiatives led by the pupils for school improvement
  • Provide opportunities for pupils to formally voice their opinions and offer suggestions in relation to many aspects of school life
  • Encourage pupils to organise events central to the life of the school
  • Act as a form of communication for the pupils within the school, between pupils and between home and school
  • Provide opportunities to raise funds for the school/for charities and for pupils to have a say in how those funds should be deployed
The elected pupils are required to be active participants in the Council, to attend regular meetings, to participate in activities and to be role models for the other students. All Council members wear badges for easy identification.
The Council meets regularly and the meetings are facilitated by Ms Gormley, the Principal. Prior to these meetings, the Student Council representatives collect items for the agenda. These items are discussed at the meeting and a set of agreed actions are taken. The members are required to report the agreed actions to the other classes.
The Council has an important role to play in the organisation of:
  • Open Days
  • Special Occasions
  • Special Presentations
  • Fundraising Events
Through our Student Council we hope to give our pupils a more active leadership role in the organisation of our school and ensure that they have a voice that is respected and considered. It involves the pupils in many of the decisions that are made regarding the day-to day running and management of the school. Discussions engaged in in classes and at Council meetings help to develop communication, reasoning, problem-solving, and collaborative skills.
Topics that come under discussion at Student Council meetings may include the following:
  • School rules
  • Behaviour and Discipline
  • Green School Issues
  • Health and Safety
  • Homework
  • Friendship
  • Lunchtime Games and Activities
  • Supervision
  • Enhancing the School Environment
  • School Uniform
  • Fundraising
